Pilgrimage and the Creakes Benefice

For hundreds of years, individual pilgrims and pilgrim groups have visited the churches in the Creakes Benefice, particularly the Church of Our Lady Saint Mary South Creake, for prayer and refreshment on their way to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, or during their stay.

In the medieval period, the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham was the second most important pilgrimage destination in England, after Canterbury. Today the village of Little Walsingham is again a focus of pilgrimage for several Christian denominations and has a rich spiritual atmosphere. Visitors can view the site of the original Shrine in the Abbey grounds and look round the ruins of this once great religious institution. They can visit the Slipper Chapel where pilgrims still take off their shoes before walking the Holy Mile, barefoot and in prayer, to the Anglican Shrine.

We believe that pilgrimages are an important part of our collective spiritual life and are supportive of all who come to worship at the feet of Our Lady. We wish to help them in their endeavours and, to that end, we invite pilgrim priests to hold their own services during the week with their pilgrims here at the Church of Our Lady Saint Mary South Creake. Advance notice is important for all pilgrimage groups. For more information, contact the Revd Clive Wylie, OC.

In addition, as an Inclusive Church, the Church of Our Lady Saint Mary South Creake hosts pilgrim groups for the regular Benefice Sung Mass at 10am each Sunday morning, where pilgrim priests are welcome to concelebrate. Those who participate in the Mass in their local church as servers and in other roles are welcome to do the same here.
